It is a natural reaction that your body enforces because your eyes will pop out, only ever so slightly, if your eyes stay open. That's what I heard anyway! x

The medical term for a sneeze is the “sternutatory reflex”. Almost all animals sneeze. A sneeze helps clear the nose and sinus regions while injecting oxygen into the cells of the body. A sniff does much the same thing. Nevertheless, a sneeze is a very complicated body action. Technically, a sneeze is produced when an irritant contacts the nasal mucosa, which in turn stimulates the trigeminal nerve, which in turn stimulates the pons and medullai of the brain, which in turn sets off additional nerve reactions, and so on. During a sneeze, tremendous stress is placed on the body. Considerable air pressure is place upon the eyes. This pressure is not enough to pop your eyes out of your head or even make them bulge out, but enough to make your eyes feel uncomfortable from the added pressure

If you sneeze with your eyes open, do your eyes pop out? This is one of those old-school urban myths that every child has heard at one time or another.
The reason we sneeze is that an irritation in our nose causes a nerve to trigger. This nerve then stimulates a group of brain cells called the "sneezing center," which causes a whole host of things to happen: Our eyes and nose water, we sneeze, our heads jerk forward and our eyes close. These reflexes get rid of anything nasty that might be in our nose, and because they're all linked it's almost impossible to sneeze without doing them all. We don't know exactly why we blink when we sneeze…maybe it cleans dust out of the eyes or stops anything nastier getting in.

Because you you are working your nose muscle! LOL! I dont knwo what those muscles are called though! LOL! And when you sneeze you lift those and inhale. The combination of those two things makes you lower your eyelids and most people just completely close their eyes, especially if you have to sneeze really bad! LOL!

Because the pressure of a sneeze is enough to damage your eyes if you keep them open so it's the body's survival mechanism to make sure they're shut.
