My nine year old son is a VERY intelegent child. I know that he can do his work but is having a terrible time staying focused on what he is supposed to be doing. Some days It takes hours and some days it takes only 45 minutes to do the same amout of work. I have tried rewarding him, disiplening him, caoxing, everything I can think of. But he just dosen't seem to be responding to any of it. Any Ideas?

I have an 8 year old son and he is the same way. I use to make sure the whole room is quite before he will do his work, that included making sure my 6 month old daughter was down for a nap during homework time. He is so easly distracted that when I am in the room he will ask random questions that have nothing to do with his homework. Just recently, I might have found a technique that works, listening to his mp3 player while doing his homework keeps him focused.

I have a 9 yr old brother and every once in a while he gets the same way.
What I have done is sit next to him and do my work. Every so often I would turn and peep over his shoulder and ask if he could help me. Then ask him if he needs my help. And when I notice that he's really getting into doing his homework, I praise him and tel him that he's doing a great job. That he's smart. That I really love it and appreciate it when he helps me with my work (Even f he doesn't know what your talking about and you him).
But if he sees that you have to do "work" too and not just little boys, and make it look like a "grown-up" thing, It might work for you.
Good luck with your son. Everything will work out. Don't worry.

I have the same problem we used a timer and gave my child a reasonable amount of time to complete each task make sure he has a quiet place to work where you can keep an eye on him and make sure there are as few things to distract him as possible like tv radio etc... if he finishes the task before the timer goes off he's rewarded if not you can take away prividledges like internet or tv or whatever his favorite thing to do in his free time is.

Give him a certain time to finish, set a timer, if he doesn't finish then come up with a consequence that you think is fair but will effect him to where he'll want to finish within that time frame. I used playing outside and my son has a lot of friends around the neighborhood so it works like a charm. You'll come up with something. Good luck.

it took me to the point of letting him figure it out on his own. He missed enough priveledges (recess at school) play time and TV time at home that eventually he started getting it done. It did get worse before it got better, but now he's very independent with his work.

this is just a faze. they grow out of this continue praising for good behavior and teaching him natural consequences for not doing his home work.. ie if he takes 45 minutes maybe he is bored with it. so it takes him longer than it should its cutting into his time to play ect.. dont worry about it so much.

Put the responsibility back on his shoulders. It will probably get worse before it gets better. Have a talk with his teacher and let them know what you are doing. By trying to "help" with the situation, he is only learning that you are going to take responsibility for his problems and that he won't have to work on them himself.

I'm sure he wishes he had a very 'intelegent' mother, too. But seriously, stop feeding him, it will do the trick.
