Watching "the Simpsons" last night, there was a joke made about being a Methodist. I've also heard people joke about how Methodists are bad. I'm Methodist and I really don't get it. What are the other sects views of Methodists? I really have a sense of humor and don't have a thin skin, so do your worst.

For Show-and-Tell the teacher asked the kids to bring something that signified their religion or denomination. Little Susie the Roman Catholic brought rosary beads; little Tommy the Baptist brought a great big Bible; little Mary the Methodist brought a casserole.
Most all religions or denominations are the butt of certain jokes. Methodists are considered kind of mainstream, middle-of-the-road, bland; therefore the jokes about them tend to exaggerate these characteristics. Just laugh and enjoy. Oh, and go to beliefnet.com to find lots of religious jokes, about all kinds of religions.
By the way, I'm a United Methodist minister.

I can see why Bart's father might say no, since Methodists don't drink. But Lisa? I would have to see the whole thing to get the meaning of what they were getting to. There is nothing wrong with being a Methodist. It is much better than being a Baptist, IMO.

I used to be Methodist. What was the joke?
UPDATE: It sounds like the joke was really about the really out there religions. Here are all these really out there religions that she could consider, and then Bart throws in the most middle of the road, accepting of all, rejecting none religion of them all, and she's like "Oh my goodness NO!" And the fact that he would even consider Methodist with the other group is what made it funny.

I dont think anyone thinks Methodist is "bad" in general, a little watered down in doctrine maybe but not bad. I don't know the Simpson's episode but it might have been that they needed a non-strict religion to pick on?

Methodism is Diet Catholicism -- All of the ritual, none of the guilt.
(The only Methodist joke I know besides an obscure band called The Dead Milkmen who did a song called 'Methodist Coloring Book')

Could it be the Methodist's take on homosexuality? They are ordaining openly homosexual people living in actively open gay lifestyles. I don't really see that as something Lisa Simpson would see as bad though because that show is over the top "Liberal"

Who knows what goes on the the hearts of the writers of entertainment drivel?
The Simpsons insult everyone sooner or later. And the insults are supposed to be funny, a la' Don Rickles humor.
But why is a nice Christian watching a show as bawdy and disrespectful of others as the Simpsons?
