My pom has these hot spots on his leg that he keeps licking. he has always had one, but he stopped licking, and now he is licking again. but this time on a his right leg that is getting bigger. we are away from him during that day...sort of. i leave at 1 to go to work and the only time he is alone is from 1 - 6 at 6 my boyfriend gets home. we bought another puppy hoping that it would give him something to do during the day when we are not home. but instead of not licking, he made a new spot. I'm concerned and don't know what to do anymore. we tried the bitter apple. we tried the witch hazel...what next?

My golden retriever used to get hot spots really bad. Switch your dogs food to a product that has no by products no corn and no wheat. Wheat tends to cause skin allergies.

Purchase Tegrin dandruff shampoo at your local super market. (Not head and shoulders - Tegrin). Bath your dog once month in the shampoo and apply Baby A&D ointment on the wound (it's the stuff for diaper rashes). Spray the bitter apple on it, and get a head cone for the dog. Keep the other dog from licking also - you may have to keep the seperate for a while.

Since bathing my Golden w/ Tegrin and switching her food its been about 5 years (She's almost 7 now) since she's had any hot spots.

Good Luck

Take him to the vet. Consider these causes, fleas, allergy, anxiety. Actually, bringing a new puppy into the house may have actually increased his anxiety, but he'll get accustomed to the newcomer, I'm sure. A vet can help diagnose allergies and give treatment. Meanwhile, try relieving the hotspots with a cool bath or just wash the area with cool water and lay off the chemicals for a couple hours. Sometimes too much treatment can irritate it more.

If you go to the vet, they should have something called SSD Cream that you can get from them. It is inexpensive and it works. I used to have a Golden Retreiver that had hot spots. This worked for her. I've seen the SSD cream used for several different things. Hot Spots, abcesses, wounds, burns, etc. It's very good stuff.

There is something obviously wrong. Dogs have been known to lick themselves raw when they are lonely/separated from their owner. It could be separation anxiety. I'd take the little guy to the vet.

Try hydro-cortisone... try that on his hot spots, if this doesnt help there could be something more wrong with him, like arthritis. He will need to see a vet if home remedies are not working. Hope he gets better!

It's quite possible he is either allergic to something, or has a thyroid issue. Don't discipline him. He's not trying to be bad...Take him to the vet.
