Check out the Mazdas, they are great cars (I have the 6 wagon and absolutely love it, it might be big enough for your needs). Look at the Mazda 5, I think it is a bit bigger than my wagon or the Tribute, if you like small SUVs (great on gas for the engine it has!).

These are all fairly new models, so you should be able to find a used one that is still only a few years old and in great condition.

I don't think you'll end up with a "car" if that's what your requirements are.

It sounds as though you'll need an SUV, or Minivan of some kind. By all means, do check out the following websites for homework/research:

They have plenty of research material for you to browse through. make sure you have time on your hands when you browse there. It's extensive reading.

Toyota Matrix - best mpg, Toyota reliability
Mazda3 Hatchback - newer, 25+ mpg, best small car
-Mazda Protege wagon - 30 mpg, built thru 2003+
Subaru Forester - small SUV, 20 mpg+, roomiest
Honda CRV - small SUV, very reliable, maybe 22+ mpg

Try a Ford Taurus, my mom has had 2, and they were both really good cars. We fit 6 people in it at one time, one being a baby in a car seat. Try this. Try to get a 2000-2006 model if you could. It also gets good mileage...

as a Volvo owner, I would highly recommend them, but for the wheelchair, take it to the dealership, and see the fittings..

If the wheelchair is foldable, you may get away with a Honda CRV.

Depends on your budget. But you can't go wrong with anything that TOYOTA makes.
