You should never brush your hair! Get a wide tooth comb and wash your hair. Then condition your hair. While the conditioner is in comb through your hair until all the tangles are gone. This is what I do. I have long hair and it's very curly. I never have a problem with tangles when I do this.

Try using a detangler after shampooing. Find a good leave in conditioner but don't put too much on your hair, just enough to comb through the tangles. My son has really long hair and uses Garnier Fructis and I think you can buy it at the grocery store or at K Mart. There is no guarantee it won't tangle throughout the day but a little brushing here and there might help to so doesn't tangle as bad if your not brushing it regularly.
Good Luck.

Go to the salon and have them cut your hair in long layers. It helps keep the tangles away and the layers make your hair look nice. Don't panic your hair will still be long, they won't cut the length, it's just layers. And at night put your hair in a ponytail or a braid, use the small scrunchies not rubber bands because those can cause snagging and breakage. Put one at the top of your head and one at the bottom of the tail.

Use a couple of drops of Jojoba oil on your wet hair. This does a great job in maintaining your hair and keeping your hair tangle free. Just make sure that you do not use too much of this oil. The best brand is Desert Esscence 100% Jojoba oil-

I found Pantene smooth and shine styling milk. When used in moderation it helps me to keep my long hair from getting as tangled. Also the Garnier line of Long and Strong shampoo and conditioner work well too. Always comb the knots out before the shower, it makes combing it out easier, and you pull less out. Also keeping the ends trimmed regularly keeps it from knotting up as fast.

Try a wide tooth comb during the conditioning step... a good deep conditioner is a great thing. If you have curly hair, try a leave-in like Mixed Chicks Leave-in Conditioner.

Find a good leave in conditioner. When combing your hair start at the ends and work up.
Try Nexxus Headress. I use to use it when I still had long hair and it worked great. I also use to use it on my clients with long hair when I still worked in the salon. It does wonders. Check out the link to read more about it.

Spray either a "leave in" conditioner (there are several on the market) or a "no tangles" spray from Johnson & Johnson (baby care products company). EIther will work fine and won't harm your hair.
Good luck! :)
