Wow, I didn't think I would ever ask a question, now I have millions of them to ask.

Anyways, aside from the obvious risk of infection, is there any dangers directly involved with getting a septum piercing,

I could do a search or ask a proffesional, but I'm at work (if you could call it that) and want to ask y'all. Any piercers out there?

I think it looks wicked, and if I was going to get a piercing, that would be the one.

Yes, I am talking about the divider between the two nostrils. (septum)

Eventhough I am a trashy tattooed weirdo, I am a pretty smart dude. So I agree with holly for the most part. However, a lot of people ask questions only half knowing what they are talking about. It's all good.

There are no serious problems with the septum piercing. The risks are just like any other piercing; infection, slight discomfort, etc. People tend to think you'll die or get brain damage if you get the piercing and for all the research I've done, I've never heard of such things.

The worst part about them is getting them straight. Its not hard to line it up, but I see plenty of friends and people with crooked septum piercings.

As long as the septum is pierced in the correct spot you won't have problems. I've had mine for 2 years and I love it. The best part about the piercing is the fact it looks awesome and its very easy to hide if need by. It heals up fairly quickly and its a pretty easy piercing to stretch, plus when done correctly it hurts no worse than ear lobe piercings, which surprises most people.

Good luck

There are no significant risks, other then the obvious ones that come with any piercing: infection, some discomfort during healing, ect...

The best thing about septum piercings it that they are by far the easiest piercings to hide, and even thought I would not recommend rotating it for the first 6 weeks, if you had to, you could flip the jewelry into your nostrils after you get it pierced. Other then that, go to a respected piercer to get it pierced, and use the sea salt soaks regularly, and you will have a piercing that you love! I love septum piercings, and I have had mine done 2X!!

When you are talking about a “normal piercing” we are assuming you are talking about getting a ring or a stud through the outside surface of the nostril on that area of the nose that flares out (called the ala nasi). We don’t think you are talking about what is often called a “ring in the nose,” meaning that the piercing ring or bar goes through the nasal septum (the divider between the two nostrils).
No matter which piercing you are talking about, most nose piercings are done with needles and not guns. And because the nose is filled with lots of nerve endings, people do tend to complain of a lot more pain with nasal piercings than with say, ear piercings. Also, since lots of stuff (like air, snot and dirt, etc.) come in and out through our noses, these piercings are more likely to get infected until they are healed well…and sometimes even afterward. (Be sure that the place you go for piercings uses sterile techniques and disposable gloves and needles.)

There are not many scientific studies of piercings, but looking through the information that is available, it appears that nasal piercings take longer than other piercings to heal completely, particularly the one through the nasal septum. There is also the danger that nose piercings could severely damage the cartilage of the nose and cause long-term problems with how your nose looks or how you breathe.

All of that being said, lots of people pierce their noses without problems. Just be sure you know for sure you really want to do this. You might try a stick-on jewel or a clip-on ring on your nose for a few weeks to be sure you really like the look before you subject yourself to the pain and potential complications of this procedure. If you are “scared’ like you say, maybe you should wait a little bit. “Scared” usually is our brain’s way of saying, “…maybe I should think about this a little longer.”

fwiw, i got my septum pierced a few years ago, and it hardly hurt. i actually had to ask him if he was done. the clamps made my eyes water, that was about it. and it healed very easily. i was able to flip it up easily within a few days (as per the recommendation by my piercer) if that's of concern to you.

i did a bunch of research before hand, and from what i read, there aren't any risks with septum piercings specifically - just the usual risks with any relatively simple piercing. i used sea salt soaks to help heal it and it worked beautifully.

i have a friend who is a piercer and her septum is pierced and has been for as long as i have known her (6 years) you know as long as you take care of things the way you are directed to then it should be good. tho she did say that it stinks when you get sick. literally stinks. i have quite a few friends who have septum piercings but only one that is also a piercer.

ok i seriouly cant stand people who come on here and try to make you sound stupid by saying "we assume your talking about this" no sh!t sherlock. if your not a professional piercer, then dont answer this question. for real. everything that frist girl said was the OBVIOUS and she wrote like 3 paragraphs on the obvious. and the part about your nose being a cartlaige and it takes longer to heal then say your ears, the top of your ears ARE cartlaige and yes it does take forever to heal. stupid. sorry i had to vent.
