My dog is eight years old. He has never been a digger. He never chewed or was destructive at all. However, he will not stop digging in the mulch in my flower beds. Does anyone know of a way to get him to stop??

dogs dig for many reasons. 1) they may not be getting enough exercise 2)they may have resent about something that haas happened in the house recently 3) its fun for them!! so you need to make it not fun.

Several suggestions...1)place unpleasant smells near where he wants to dig. some suggest mothballs others say place his poo there 2) place decorative stone over it 3) squirt him with the hose when he is digging.

Some good idea here about making the mulch smell unpleasant (provided you don't actually kill the flowers. I would use a tabasco, pepper method for this. Less chemicals to worry about.) and using a spray bottle to correct behavior. I think mostly he's digging because it's fun and it smells really good to him. Could be you have some critters living in there too, like moles. Take him out, run him around, wear him out and, if he still has the energy to dig, use the bavior correction: spray bottle, clap your hands loudly and say 'no' in a firm loud voice, that sort of thing.

My 8 year old also digs in the mulch and nibbles at bit of something that's in there. Then she throws up. I think the manufacturer must add something to make it smell and taste so good.

2 things you can do one is mix a bucket of water with pinesol an water the mulch, two is sprinkle moth balls around, the rain will dissolve them in time so will have to replace them, either choice will not harm plants nor the dog, the dog smells the odors an chooses to go somewhere else.

There are some really good answers listed but the easiest way I've seen - go to petsmart or petco. There are deterrants that will keep your dog (and any stray animal) out of your garden.

Good Luck

I have a digger too. I put a palastic baby pool out side filled with water. She digs in there believe it or not. I also have heard of people putting sand boxes out.

Go to the pet store and you can get this boundary spray. since it smells bad to dogs your dog will not go anywhere near it!

You can try spraying him with a water bottle when you catch him.
