I have an addiction to something (it isn't anyhting like drugs)
I am a Christian and I have given this to God many times before and I just keep going back to what I was doing before.
I feel like I am not able to get anywhere with my life, is there anything I can do that'll help me overcome the addiction.

This is a tough one. Seeing as it is not Drugs, I am assuming that it is not a physical addiction, and must be something you do because it makes you feel good at the time. Then after it is all done, you feel guilty because it is against your Christian beliefs. I struggled with this a lot. You know you shouldn't be doing something but when the temptation comes you literally do it, knowing you are going to hate yourself later. Its really hard to overcome.

First of all I would find out if, what I was doing was really against my belief system. You may have heard from others that is it wrong, but have you ever found out for yourself. The internet is a great source of information about the Bible and differing beliefs. I would type in your problem and then do some reading from some religious experts on the matter.

If it definitely is against your belief system, then you have to find a way to stop doing it. In reality, God said that he would give the strength to those who ask for it. You have already asked for strength and so far you haven't received it. So it is really in God's hands to help you stop. Don't knock yourself too much if it hasn't happened yet. I guess you just have to continue trying, some things take years, somethings are never overcome, but if you have given it to God, then its his responsibility to provide the help you need, and not your fault.

You may want to talk to someone like a pastor or friend.

Good luck, you will be fine.

First of all, you need to know that this is NOT just in your head, God has NOT abandoned you because you have prayed but are still addicted, and you are NOT a bad person, you have a bad disease. God loves you and is standing by to help as soon as you are ready to step up for yourself.

Addiction is a biochemical process that needs to be dealt with medically. It depends on what you are addicted to as to how it should be handled. The most important thing is that whatever you are addicted to is poisonous to your system and once you are properly detoxed (the terminology is the same regardless of whether your addiction is substance or behavioral), it must be avoided at all costs for the rest of your life.

Get professional medical help ASAP so that you can get through this and get on with the joyful and prosperous life you deserve! Take care and best of luck! :-)

I am a recovering alcoholic, and I used to be addicted to nerve pills, plus I smoked one cigarette after another. I am a Christian too, but I finally saw what all this was doing to me and the people I love, so I said, " God. I need you to take the desire for these things away, like, now, please." He answered my prayer. I went cold turkey on the booze & cigs, and got help for the drinking(AA) + councelling on an out patient basis. I am working with a good doctor with the anxiety meds, but I really think my sincere prayer was the key. It may not happen over night, but if you are truly sincere, I believe God will deliver you from whatever is keeping you in bondage. I'll pray for you . God Bless.

Keep praying. God tells us that He will give us what we ask for. He just wants us to stay in contact with Him. I too have had an addiction, the addiction of overeating and craving junk food. I have prayed and asked for His help. My doctor sent me for a routine colostomy. A problem was found. I now have to eat the right foods. Praise Him. He answers prayers.

Well, you don't mention what this addiction is, so i'm not sure if many of us can help you...

Maybe go and see a priest or someone from your church who can guide you. If it something embarassing, go to a therapist...

And, finally, pray!! You've probably been doing this for ages, but God will show you the way!! Keep the faith!

GOOD LUCK!!

You have to grab life by the horns and go for it.Even giving the problem to God doesn't make it go away, you have to help yourself or it isn't going to work.I have felt desolate many times,I am just glad each day that I can keep trying.Don't give up on yourself.I have seen people do that also, and it isn't a pretty sight.

Why do you want to overcome it, it clearly is what you're living for. If it's a need then just go for it, you shouldn't deny your needs and desires. Because that kind of denial will make you worse and sad.

You don't need the power to get over it, other things (such as religion) want you to do that. But it's your own life and you can do whatever you want, you'll end up doing what you are really supposed to.

I am sorry that you are struggling with something. I don't know you but i will pray for you. Just keep praying about it and tell your friends and family that you have a prayer request and that they should remember you in their prayers. It will be hard to get over but put ALL your trust and faith in God and he will help you.

Maybe try talking to a Counselor or trusted friend, priest. They may be able to help you come up with a plan to rid yourself of this addiction. Or try to find another activity to replace it.
