try Warren mill camping and caravan site. Near to Bambrugh Castle and very close to Seahouses where you can get the best fish and chips in Northumberland. Site about 2 miles from Banbrugh on the A1. Been loads of times. Small bar with really good meals and a small outdoor pool for the kids. Nothing really in the way of evening antertainment but other campers generally gather aroung tent for a drink or 3.

The Lake District or the Scottish Borders. wwwvisitscotland.co.uk for ideas.
I assume you'll be powering up the M6. You can be in border country in 4-6 hours on a good day. The site will give you camp sites in Ecosse'. Remember the east and west coast of Scotland are like chalk and cheese and there are no midges on the east coast. The scenery in Central Scotland, up the A9 north of Perth is FANTASTIC.

Appleby. It's a bit off your direct route but it's a wild and lonely little town. Plenty of bleak and deserted fields to pitch up in and have a real scary night.
