I think by "masses" he means "lots and lots". The balance between them is constantly changing. Them, and shifting energy levels, pretty much sums up the universe.

That jumbled description doesn't sound like anything in science I know about.

Let me ask you, if blind, unconscious physical laws can generate snowflakes of dazzling beauty and near infinite variety, is it really something to be looked down on? Why do you need a human like mind at the helm?
