Go to the c:\ drive or boot drive and select the boot.ini. Select the properties of the boot.ini. Uncheck the "read only"attribute. click apply.
Then open the word pad. Start\accessories\note pad.
Click on the file and drag and drop on the note pad.
Delete the entries you don't want and save.
Then go back and reapply the read only option!

If you can't find or see the file go to the top of the explorer menu and select tools.
Scroll down to folder options.
select " show hidden files and folders" and DESELECT(uncheck) Hide protected system operating files (Recommended)!
this should enable you to see the file and complete above instructions! .

Just remember that these are listed in the order you see at boot! So delete the others you don't select!

Enjoy a worry free boot!

you need to edit the boot.ini file.
to do this you can go to the controll pannel and click on system.
then click advanced tab, then startup and recovery.
on that page you will see a drop down box to select default operating system, you select the one you know works then set the timeout timer down to say 10 seconds and you are done.
or you can click the button to manually edit the boot.ini file and you remove the second xp install option you spoke of in your question, then when you are done click save and that will remove it from your startup, but be carfull you dont remove the wrong one and then it will try to boot the other system that doesnt work.

good luck

Such are the hazards of letting your friends tinker with your computer. Didn't your friend tell you you can use the up and down arrow keys to select the one you want?

Somehow, an epidemic has been started whereby everyone thinks they have to reformat and reinstall XP. THAT IS A DRASTIC STEP AND SHOULD ONLY BE USED AS A LAST RESORT. That's like throwing away clothes when they get dirty, when all that's needed is putting them into the wash. If you have an XP problem, fix the problem.

Anyway, it sounds like you're left with a mess and cleaning it up is beyond your own capability. So take it to a professional or live with it.

Sometimes when you reinstall windows the boot.ini file doesn't reconfigure properly. Go to control panel, system, advanced tab, Start Up and recovery Settings button, click edit button, and delete all but the first one (there should be 3 lines). Also look up "boot" in help.

Please be very careful when messing around with this utility that I am about to tell you. First, go to the run application, listed below the search icon in your start menu (not classic view.) Type in msconfig.exe, it will bring up the program. Once it does, click on the boot.ini tab and select the ones that you want to get rid of in the menu. Please be careful that you delete only two because one required for the computer is put. I hope this helps you.
