mankind has shot, poisoned and trapped wolves almost to extinction not to mention other species. the best single reason is the wolf predation on livestock, but there's something else behind. it's far too unclear for me. every year wolves take less sheeps than any disease does. what makes people go to such extremes?

The fact is: humans are taking away wildlife territories. We take, take and take.

I would love to see the return of the wolf. As for sheep... they destroy every little bit of plant that tries to grow. Sheep are a disease on the countryside. They use a lot of space and don't feed that many people. Wolves and foxes have a really rough deal! People pull out archaic arguments as to why these wildlife animals should be shot! There is no logic to their argument.

So in conclusion: down with sheep and more wolves please!

Wolves are much easier to attack than disease. Having said that, any loss of any sheep is a loss of money. A farmer or rancher is also a business man. He needs to maximize his profits the best he can. When something attacks his profits, he is going to do what he can to compensate. If the attacker is a wolf or other wild animal, that animal will be hunted down and removed. They also treat their sheep for diseases to the extent that they can. Since disease causes more death, does that mean the farmer should ignore other causes of death? They have to make a living just like you or I. Unless someone can come up with another solution, that is what has to be done. Even removing the animal to another location does not help because once wolves find the easy prey of a sheep herd, they will return.

Pity you didn't put this in a different section. The Turks have a legend of following the grey wolf until it settled. That was in modern day Turkey. A fact not missed by the Kurdish population or the Greeks who were eventually thrown out. Chechnya has a similar legend, but they insist it was a she-wolf and they settled where she whelped. Need I mention Romulus and Remus? Keeping the wolf from the door has tradition. On a purely animal level they are magnificent animals, bring them back to re-establish the balance of nature. But beware the Grey Wolf of Turkey - a different beast altogether.
