Question: do you Have to Have A passport to get into canada
Key word: INTO
To get into Canada, NO you do not need a passport. Nothing has changed in regards to getting INTO Canada. Your basic government issued picture ID (drivers license) and original birth certificate. (proof of citizenship)
Now...this is where all the other answers were confused. (except one)
If you are originally from the USA, you likely want to go home. To "enter or re-enter" the USA by air, you require a passport as of January 23, 2007.
If you are "re-entering" the USA by sea or land you do not need a passport until the earliest January 2008. (exact day has not been decided) You can use a passport as ID, but it is not required.
Have fun in Canada!
PS anyone who doubts me, take a look at this article...the way it is worded: "Americans flying to Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean made sure to bring their passports Monday because of a new rule going into effect Tuesday that requires them to show one to get back into the country."

Yes, you need a passport to get into Canada. The new law took affect earlier this month. It kinda sucks because my husband and I always used to go to Canada, but I can understand why they are doing it like this. It is better to be safe, then sorry. We are at war right now!
If you are planning a trip anywhere outside of the U.S. you will need a passport, and it takes 6-8 weeks to get it back. You can pick up a passport form at your local post office. You will need to fill out the form, have passport pictures taken, submit two forms of I.D. (s.s.card and birth certificate) plus your driver's license when you turn in your passport back to your post office. Passport pics are taken at the post office, or wal-mart, or some places in the mall. A passport with pics included costs around $112 with normal delivery. You can pay extra money to get it the next day. It is $50 or so more dollars on top of the $112!
I hope this information is useful. Good luck and happy vacationing!

As of January 23, 2007, you need a passport for Canada ONLY if you are going there via Air.
As of January 1, 2008, you need a passport to get to Canada by Air, Land, or Sea.
The same applies for Mexico as well.

as of right now you only need a passport if you are returning to the US by plane. next year, you will need a passport if traveling by boat back to the US and in beginning of 2009 you will need a passport to return to the US by vehicle. if you are planning on driving to Canada over spring break i don't think they will give you one. there only giving them to people that are flying abroad as of right now

Technically you dont need one yet to drive in, although it is ALOT easier if you do. Much less chance of getting hasseled or delayed at the border. ( espeically coming back in)
Flying in does require a passport.

At the moment you need one only if you are flying in, but, by car, you have a little while. Same as going the other way.

Not yet, it's going to happen within the next year though. Make sure you have your license with you. And bring your birth certificate just in case.

No you don't. You're supposed to, but you don't have to. They'll give you a hard time at customs and drill you a bit but they're giving everyone a 2-3 month grace period.
