This morning I had to help with other people this man who was suffering a Epilepsy Fit.
I have done first aid before but my certificate ran out sometime ago.
This man was eating a Big Mac when the convulsions started.
All the usual happened and it was dealt with.
But after a minute his bottom lip was dark blue so tried to clear his airway but could not open his mouth.
The contents of his mouth started to come out.
How do I clear his mouth if I cannot open it?
Any help appreciated. Thank you

For one, the best way to deal with an Epilepsy sesure, is to clear the area around the victim, than pad the surface just below the victim head. Then step out of the way to let him/her have their sesure. If the seure worsens, like the victim usaully has short ones, & this one is long, or vis vesa. Then the best course of action is to is to tilt the head back so the victim does not lose air. 1.) The area around the victim is cleared, & place underneath a padded area.(Towel, blanket, pillow, etc.) 2.) Make sure the airway is clear.
Now if the air way is blocked, then survey the mouth, by grabbing the lower lip, and opening the mouth. Checking to see is there is an obstructed airway, checking to see if the tongue is not blocking the airway, (Which can lead to suffecation). If you can not get the mouth of the victim open, or the victim is having an extended sesure, then best course of ction is to call 911. Now you always want to use a land line or a cell phone. Reason being that there are less things to deal w/. Battery power, Signal, etc.
If you can get the mouth open, then look inside to see the piece of meat or whatever that is blocking the airway. Then turn there head away from you, then use the right digit. Index finger for adult, & child, but pinkie for infants. Use the appropriate digit. Then make a sweap w/ your digit (Hopefully you are gloved up) away from yourself, reason being that whatever is coming out, might be in the very direction of yourself. Not a pleasent picture. Then put them into a recovery position. 1.) Kneel beside the victim, make sure both legs are straight. 2.) Place the arm nearest to you out at a right angle to the body, elbow bent palm up. 3.) Bring the far arm across the chest, hold the back of the hand against the victim's cheek nearset to you. 4.) With your other hand, grasp the far leg just above the knee and pull it up. 5.) Keeping the victim's hand pressed against the victim towards you. 6.) Adjust the upper leg so both the hip and the knee are bent at right angles.
This recovery position works wonders. I suggest that you should renew that CPR &1st Aid cert. There are a lot of new things. I hope I was a help, & good luck!

Not to fully disagree with gazeygoo, yes, deifnitely turn him to his side. However, the first rule is LIFE over LIMB. Definitely DO NOT use your fingers to try to open his mouth if he is convulsing. If the seizure was over there is still a chance of a second one beginning in short time. You need to use whatever resources are available to you to clear the airway. In many cases, especially if the person is known to have epilepsy, it is not necessary to call an ambulance. If the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, or if another seizure begins soon after the first, or if the person cannot be awakened after the movements have stopped, an ambulance should be called. If you are concerned that something else may be wrong, or the person has another medical condition such as heart disease or diabetes, you should contact a doctor immediately. In your case however, since he had a closed airway for an undetermined amount of time, an ambulance should have definitely been called.

To begin NEVER call a seizure a "fit", how barbaric. Once the jaw is clamped it cannot be opened. NEVER try to force anything into a seizure patients mouth!! You can cause serious damage. Considering he was eating this can result in choking. You must work with what you have. If possible get the patient on his side to help any food or vomit to drain from the mouth. You next most obvious treatment would be to call an ambulance. Then turn care over to a paramedic.

EMT Paramedic

Turn him on his side so he doesn't aspirate. If he did then as you know you would have to do the Heimlich...yes, even if he is convulsing.
