With hearing about the various benefits of yoga (reduced stress, increased flexibility, better breathing, etc.), I'm considering registering for an introductory class to test the waters.

Have you tried yoga? What could I expect? What does one need for classes? What could I expect to pay for an introduction? How long would/should classes last (both class-time and days/weeks required ...)? How does one check out the credibility of a yoga center? Would you recommend yoga or not? Is yoga for real or are all those claims pure hogwash?

Yoga is really great and does all the things that you describe. But, there are several different types of yoga. The best are the traditional like Hatha or Kundilini (my favorite, but hard to find an instructor). I don't care of the workout yoga's like power yoga - that is not the purpose. A good yoga class will teach you the positions, have meditation and chanting involved, challenge you and your body, and it won't hurt. You will need a yoga mat (you can get them at Target or Walmart) and wear loose fitting clothing. Prices will depend on the type of yoga and where you live. They usually aren't very expensive. The classes should be around 1 hour or so and most people go 2-3 times a week. You can get online to check the credibility or ask the yoga studio that you are interested to show the credentials. I definitely recommend yoga - great for the mind, body and soul! Yes, yoga is for real. It is a ancient tradition that is recommend by the best. Go ahead and take a chance - it will be good for you!! You can read up on it, there are several books available.

Yoga is not pure hogwash!

Very harmonizing
good affect on the body
credibility of yoga center: if they don't push
you past your natural limits ... which might
surprise you ... because yoga is not a
gymnastic exercise, it is a spiritual
approach to exercise and is gentle and
natural .... take it slowly, because slowly
is enough ... even though it might not
seem that way to you ... if you take it
easy, you will see surprising results...

yoga center: room should be warm, clean and comfortable, take your own mat .. classes sould be an hour at the most... if you can afford the time and expense ... you cannot put down your work after a certain amount of time.... although you can take off and work alone .. . you do not need an advanced routine for it to be effective ... just something that is right for you and your body and your schedule ....

Although there are yogis who are very advanced, you do not need to go to the extremes - headstands, etc ... just it needs to be right for you ... Cheers, Peace & Love

I have tried yoga and can certainly tell you that what all you have heard about yoga is not hogwash and yogic techniques do help one relax, improve breathing and increase flexiblity. It should not take you more than a month to learn some basic techniques.
The cost would vary from place to place.Say in my country (India) you can attend yoga classes at good centres at just say 25 to 50 dollars a month.

Yoga are basically of two types.

One those will help you achieve concentration, and the ones which can be done as exercises. And dont worry you will never regret it unless the yoga center is run by fakes. But it involves complex breathing and stretching exercises which should be done under the supervision of an experienced teacher.

The key to yoga practise is still in the concentration itself, which is where the breathing method comes in. You can master all the stances physically but without the proper breathing method, the essence of it is limited to physical and not mental.
Learning the breathing methods will give you a focus on the concentration during training, which will complement the whole...physically, spiritually and mentally. You might find some tips on breathing here :
