All different town and cities have their own regulations for becoming a Taxi Driver. The taxi licences are governed and issued by the Licensing Committee of the local Council, and the Compliance of the conditions of the License is monitored by the department of the environment. To apply for a Licence, you have to obtain an application form from the Hackney Licensing Office in your town or city. With this application form, you have to supply 3 references and a Police report to state if you have any criminal record or outstanding charges against you. You will have to sit a few tests. One test is on locations in the area you are licensed for, and to be able to read grid references from a map. The next test is your knowledge of routes. You will be given an Oral test on this and you will be given different routes from Ato B, and you have to give the shortest route and name every street you have to go through to reach the destination. You may also have to attend classes to learn how to deal with disabled people . How to fold wheelchairs, how to assist them into a car correctly. If you pass all this, then you are granted a licence. You have to pay for the licence. I can't recall what the fee is at present, but when I was driving, it was about £160 a year. If you want to use your own car, then you have to have insurance for "Hire and Reward" which is expensive. You must also submit, and pay a fee to have your car "Plated". This is a very severe test on the car. because it is for Public hire, the upholstery is checked, as well as bodywork. There are to be no oil leaks at all, and the vehicle must not be more than 5 years old. You also have to have a Meter fitted at yoour own expense About £200. Then if the car passes the test you have to pay for the car to be licensed. About £130.The other alternative is to hire a car from a taxi company and pay about £160 a week rental plus your own wages. But you still need to have a taxi License to drive a taxi.

Be warned - taxi driving is not a career with future. 10 years from now we will see the first self-driving taxis in cities. I would not invest a lot of time/money into it. A good short term alternative is driving limousine service as it requires no training/qualifications (apart from a driving license). I did it for about two weeks. The pay is terrible though.

If you live in the United States, upgrade your license to whatever your state requires of a cab driver. Study maps of the area you will be driving in so you will have some idea where you are going. Don't have a slew of tickets or a felony conviction, and then present yourself at the cab company and make an application.

If you live in South Africa, get a car, put as many as you can into it and charge them all.
