Happened to a friends son. He stole a milk and was arrested at school later that day. He told police he didn't think they'd let him have a second milk, so he took it. He hasn't been sentenced yet, but the whole school knows! I guess they decided to make him an example. I think its a little sad.

I would not have had the child arrested for such a minor offense in the first place. However, I would have made an example of some kind out of what took place. No one should take what they did not pay for. he should do detentions and everyone should know why. There should also be more specific rules and regs regarding the conditions of whether a child can have a second milk or not. But ultimately the child should not be in the court room for this offense. This is a school matter and the police have bigger matters to concern themselves with. And the school could better prepare their students for the real world by handling this matter within perhaps with a student council making the decisions on this child's future. After all, isn't the school system all about teaching "team work"?

I don't agree with stealing. However, I think the school would be better off doing two things.
1. Keep it in house. Detention or washing blackboards or the like.
2. Call CPS and make sure the child is getting enough to eat
at home. If not, they might be able to get the parents on a program to subsidize their income to buy food (WIC or foodstamps.)

I'm a police officer and I see plenty of kids charged with crimes. But I don't think THIS case rises to that level yet.

What he did was wrong. It's sad that he didnt' have the money to pay for the extra milk but it doesn't matter stealing is stealing whether it's milk, food, drugs or anything else and no matter where it's at. The person needs to be punished for their action or this whole world will be worse off then it is. I don't think they'll throw him in jail or anything proably just give him a day in juvielle if he's under 16 but I hope he's learned his leasson and won't do it anymore.

I would tell his parents but not the teacher or anyone else! To sentence a child is very cruel! His parents have to take care of what he did. Talk with him and then make him understand that what he did was wrong.

Sentenced??? OMG where is that school. The most he can get is one day in juvenile, if that. In school all they usually do is send you to extra curriculum classes for desturbed children and deans office hell. Then they call your parents and you suppose to get your "a** whooped" at home by your parents.

Well, it is a little sad if he isn't getting enough to eat. However, letting any child think that theft is O.K., does not seem to be the way to go either.

Stealing is stealing.

This case is sad and the charges against him should be dropped but let's hope he learned his lesson.

It really depends on the entire circumstances. (Age of kid, history of kid, etc.) With the info given it sounds like it is overboard. It usually can be dealt with from within the school.(detention, expulsion, etc.)
