Apart from the obvious vet's visit, (planned for this weekend), anybody have any experience with this? Or ideas about what might be wrong? OR just any sensible advice? Thanks!

this could be a flea infestation problem. mange, ring worm, or even a pet food allergy. the vet will be able to tell you the exact cause. what are you feeding him? you should move up to a holistic or at least ultra premium brand. eagle pack, wellness, natural choice, evo, nutrisource. if its a food allergy id go with eagle pack. if its fleas infestation id use frontline plus for cats. if its mange hell need an injection, same with ringworm

My cat loses fur in various spots. Different vets had different theories. Allergic to fleas, hot spots, food allergies, stress, etc... It always came down to an expensive steroid shot, an expensive bag of vet brand food and expensive vet bill after they got done drawing blood and running a bunch of tests that turned up no answers. Right now he has very little fur from the base of his tail up to the middle of his back. It isn't pretty, but it doesn't bother him at all so I'm just going to wait this one out. Let me know if you have better luck!

My sister's cat was actually pulling the hair out himself, especially from his tail. He has a form of suriosis (don't know how to spell it). I think you can get pills for that. It's a dry skin condition and I think it's really itchy and irritating.

Diet. Your cats skin and fur are a reflection of it's health. If the food you are feeding your cat is not meeting it's health needs, it's skin and coat will reflect this.
