A good aggressive target is 2 pounds per week, but I want to stress that you should not depend on pounds lost for your goal. Too often, people concentrate on losing pounds and end up losing a lot of muscle along with the fat and therefore end up looking skinnier, but droopier. Stuff starts to sag. You'll hear a lot of people say this is loose skin because they were this weight in the past but now their skin sags. It's really that their body composition has changed.

I'm biased towards weight training - hard core weight training at that. It has really worked for me to reach my goals. Don't worry, you won't look like Arnold Schwartzenegger if you don't shoot steroids like Arnold Schwartzenegger.

That being said, I highly recommend the following two articles that not only outline a diet and workout plan, but also say *why* they are beneficial. The plans are 13 weeks in length.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.

I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.

It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

There are many things that work, but you should always consult a doctor before beginning to lose such a large amount of weight. Yet, what has worked for me in the past was drinking a lot of water with lemon. 2 glasses before every meal. This fills you up so you eat less, consume less calories and are able to burn more calories than you are taking in. Walking is a wonderful way to shed unwanted pounds as well as biking. You should also eat several small meals a day and stop eating around 7pm as that is the time the bodies metabolism starts to go to sleep. Try munching on fresh fruit and veggies when you get the hunger pangs.
Good Luck!

If I were you I'd eat oatmeal every morning for breakfast. And maybe a banana - and that's it. Don't skip it.
If you're going to skip a meal, skip dinner, the more you eat before you go to bed the more you gain. Snack on a piece of fruit and some veggies instead.
Add some raw baby carrots to your lunch. Whole Wheat bread.
Beans are great for you. Black eyed peas and such.
If you have the time for two hours of exercise at least every other day including stretching and crunches. Sometimes if I don't want to go outside to run I stay inside and just stretch and do sit-ups and push ups, and some cardiovascular like jumping jacks and dancing around.

Eat 4 small meals, drink plenty of water instead of soda, exercise, exercise, exercise is so important. It takes lots of discipline and determination. I was 190lbs which was the high weight I gained because I always maintained 168. I lost weight in 4 to 5 months and now I'm 174lbs which is great for me. Also see a nutritionist for a plan that will work for you, Good luck.

Almost every question on here is the same. Everyone wants to lose weight "fast and easy." There is no such thing. Eat less, eat right and exercise more. It's not fast and it's not easy......but it's very simple. People complicate diet and exercise WAY too much. Just do it. If you really want to lose weight, YOU have to provide the motivation. If you don't have that, you aren't going to do anything but continue to gain.

It's much easier to gain weight, than to lose it.

I lost about 50 lbs in two months while i was deployed to afghanistan. CARDIO is the only answer. Alternate between eliptical and treadmill. As far as your diet if you want to lose the 40 lbs fast stay away from carbs. A carb restriction works in the short term. Watch out for rice, bread, potatoes etc....Slowly begin to integrate weight training to tone. Also there are alot of supplements that will help you reach your goal. I took a couple of things that helped me curb my apppetite. i also drank a slim fast carb control shake once a day as a meal replacement. good luck...

Honestly the South Beach Diet is working for me. You just got to stick with it and work out a little bit during the day. Just by cutting calories and eating right you can drop some pounds. My Dad went on it 2 months ago and he has lost 20 lbs. If you don't like it try something else but it worked for me...good luck!!

Lose the cheese from your diet to begin with, its full of fat. Replace it with carrot sticks or something similar. Chewing gum is ok as long as it is the sugar free stuff. When you need to skip lunch make sure what you eat instead is not fattening. Good luck on losing the weight!

you need to start with a cardio exercise in the morning, either running or brisk walking for at least 15-30 min. then on breakfast avoid eating fried stuff for breakfast, eat some fruits and some milk instead, then snacks of low fat granola bars or a round of fruits again, avoid drinking sodas or colas, drink lots of water instead, then if you have time for exercise and dont have access to weigths then just 2 sets of push-ups of 12 reps, then 2 sets of set-up of 12 reps also then do some shadow boxing for at least 10 minutes,
then snacks again of fruits if possible then lots of water, then in the evening make sure you will get your protien diet like lean meat or fish some veges and brown rice and again more fruits, never eat ice cream after dinner its bad for your body, and never over indulge in any kind of food,
