Does anyone know how to get documentation showing present marital status?
I am an non-military American woman that wants to marry a German man in Denmark. I have never been married before.
Can someone please tell me how to get documentation showing present marital status other than tax return papers? Has anyone out there, who is not in the military, had this experience before?

I have married a woman from another country and I had to go to the US embassy in her country to get an affidavit signed that says that I was not married.

That sounds extremely odd to me, I didn't need to provide a document like this prior to marrying my Swiss husband. I would think though that an affidavit notarized by a public official would suffice.

Go to your local County Clerk's Office, or Office of Vital Statistics. They usually have records that are up to date and will gladly give you a copy if you furnish them with the proper I.D.

Write to vital statistics in your state or province.

A notarised affidavit should do the job for you and should be accepted.
