1) small pieces that can break off or be removed easily
2) how loud the sounds or music is. some toy have very loud sounds and can be bad for the child's hearing.

1. cheap plastic toys usually break so they don't last long.

2. kids lose interest in toys quickly.

3. Toy Libraries stock lots of good quality toys that are borrowed for a 2wk period.

1) does it suit the child's age? (you don't want to give a toddler a barbie doll. she might choke on one of her stilletos!)
2) does it teach good values? (unless you want to teach your child about violence, go ahead and get him a toy gun!)
3) is it value for your money? (quality vs. quantity--- don't buy something just because it's expensive. it doesn't assure anything. don't buy something cheap just so you can get more. it's cheap because it breaks easily. so you'll end up having to buy a new toy...added cost)

the childs age - will the toy have small parts that can go in the mouth? is it appropriate for that age group? will it challenge the child to learn more?

parental approval of such toys, for ex. a muslim family may not want a their child to play with a toy dog, i would prefer my child not play with toy guns.

appropiate age. toys always indicate what age it is for

make sure it doesn't make noise. it get's really annoying after a while. if it makes noise, check with you can turn it of or quiet.

buy something that helps them developing their fantasy, creativity....

age on the box. small peices and what annoying sounds it makes because if the sound is bad then the child will "loose" it while he/she is sleeping.
