The father of a friend died, and I was wondering if there were any Indian or Hindi funeral customs to show condolences to the family of the dead. It was very sudden, and I know my friend wishies he were in India with his family right now (we're in Pennsylvania).

I believe you can send your friend or the family members flowers - it will not offend them since you are from America. Please remember though that you shouldn't send bright colors - stick to white or very light yellow colors. Being there for your friend in his time of need, I am sure will also help him out. Even if he doesn't want to talk or share photos, you can still be with him so he isn't alone (and more importantly doesn't feel alone).

I am an indian and when my friend's dad passed away we all attended the funeral and joined in the mourning. One custom we indians follow is when we leave a funeral house we do not tell them we are leaving, but just nod our head or something and leave the place quietly. We dun find it auspicious to tell and leave a funeral. You can be there for your friend and thats the best you can do. Hmm there is no particular colour code but you can go in white. Sorry to hear though.

Wear something formal. In black or white. Dont end up in a mini skirt.
