Try getting a cheap fare for travel on a cargo ship. It sounds funny but each ship can house a certain number of civilian passengers. The accomodations aren't terrible and you'll get there just the same without all of the conga line/ limbo dance cheesiness of a cruise. I personally have never done it but have friends who have. Also, try smaller ports that still have international shipping traffic. If you call the shipping offices in those cities, they may be able to give you more info.

You should work by the time you are travelling, for example if you want to travel around europe, you could work for one month in a restaurant or something like this in one country, where you can eat for free, so you can save some money and then you can travel to another place.
for acommodation, if you don´t have any friend or friend of a friend where you can stay for free, you should go to hostels, that are very very cheap. Good luck!
