A profile projector is a long focus microscope that permits examination of profiles of objects that are located inches from the bottom lens (unlike regular microscopes which must be within a fraction of an inch of the object) and which are provided with very fine adjustment of location of the object and a variety of light sources.
Almost all of them are used for inspection of manufactured pieces and when projecting the image onto a screen at the top, produce an outline or profile of the piece. When being used for inspection, commonly a template is placed on the screen that shows the range of correct outlines (vs errors.)
Many on the market now have control and output methods that permit a computer to control the image location and examine the piece.
