I thought it was quite easy to change the name on the passport. Essentially, you complete the relevant passport form, provide the marriage certificate, and pay a small fee. I was not aware that you had to pay the full cost of the passport as the security checks will have already been when the passport was first issued.

However, why ask on Yahoo Answers where you will get a multitude of answers? Why don't you speak to the passport office http://www.passport.gov.uk/index.asp directly? They must reissue passports to newly married women quite often.

You will have to get a new passport and pay the full cost! I believe you could wait until it expores but that could cause all sorts of problems if you want to buy a house, change jobs (and need security checks) oreven open a bank account and obviously airline tickets and seating and hotel bookings. It says on the passport agency website that you should have your passport in your current legal name so yes she should change it.

I got married last year and decided to just spend the money and get it changed, you also have to post off your marriage certificate (you can't out of it with Check and Send though, I desperately didn't want to post ours off!). I think it is terrible that you get charged for this (the Driving Licence is free to change by the way!) and is a way of penalising newly married couples.

Be helpful to her changing her name on everything it is a drawn out job and quite emotional in a way too.

When I got married, I had to send my old passport off with the marriage certificate and they sent me a new one which lasted the remainder of my old one. I did have to pay £11 (10 years ago)

You cant change names on passport (for security reason). But generally speaking passport arent that expensiv and you get one for about 10 years or so.
Why take a chance?
I think its easier if you got id with your wifes maiden name for her. But again why take a chance? Pay the full price! Johan
