Genetics do have a small part in whether or not you are more predisposed to get them, however if some take precautionary methods to reduce the look of them as they would form. Stretch marks occur when the secondary layer of skin below the epidermis (dermis) is stretched (due to rapid weight gain/loss, pregnancy...) rather quickly and the dermis does not have enough time to realize the body is changing and needs to stretch in order to accomidate the new surface area. Some people genetically have more elasticity in their skin so it is able to stretch easier and not leave marks. You can reduce the look of stretch marks and prevent them (most likely) by using a cocoa butter lotion with vitamin e to add moisture and elasticity to the skin. This will also fade the stretch marks and even out the skin tone at any age of the mark. It will usually start out dark red/inflamed looking, then purple or dark red, then eventually fade to a white/silver. I hope I helped you...if you want to know anything else just ask =)

Stretch marks of the skin affect a large percent of the population. Stretch marks appear as streaks on the skin, often in the stomach, breast, buttocks, hips, arms, and thighs. They can initially be pink, brown, or purple, they normally fade to a whitish-silvery shade over time. It is estimated that almost 90% of pregnant women develop stretch marks, along with 60-70% of adolescent women, and 30-40% of adolescent males. What causes stretch marks? Stretch marks occur when the skin stretches rapidly due to weight gain, pregnancy, muscle building, or physical development. The underlying dermal layer of skin is stretched beyond its ability to recover normally and the tissue tears and is damaged, causing scar tissue to form in the affected area. Its like stretching a rubber band or balloon too many times - eventually it does not return to its original shape. This can happen during rapid weight gain or muscle gain, or during rapid growth spurts.

Preventing Stretch Marks

Since the causes of stretch marks are known (rapid weight gain or muscle gain), preventing stretch marks involves avoiding the causes. If you are planning on having children, you probably can't avoid getting pregnant and the resulting rapid weight gain. However, wearing a good support maternity bra can help, as can using some creams to maintain skin elasticity. Controlling your diet and avoiding excess fats also helps. Retin-A has also been shown to minimize and reduce stretch marks, but it is prescription only and should not be used during pregancy and breast feeding. You'll likely see a million creams aimed at pregnant women who don't want stretch marks - keep in mind that the vast majority won't do anything more than basic hand cream, which itself won't do much.

No I don't think that it's genetic. Stretch mark has alot to do with the elasticity of the skin. Taught skin won't have stretch marks, but as the skin starts to loose it tightness, and as fat deposit itself into underlying cells, it stretches. Does this make sense here what I'm saying.

The above answer is good, but I would like to add to it. Exercise is also important - working muscles increases the elasticity of the skin. Use plenty of moisturizer a (good one) erbaviva.com sells some that are good, and 100percentpure.com. Anything that contains blackcurrent oil or chocolate is great. Blackcurrent oil helps cell renewal, and maintains elasticity of the skin.

It can be a variety of things - genetics does play a big part, but how well you take care of your skin, your diet, and how much time you spend in the sun all contribute.
