Yesterday when I went to the bathroom, after standing up I noticed a very small steak fo blood on my stool,my stool was a very light brown.I called and set up an appointment with my Dr. and it is set for tomorrow.Yesterday at lunch I ate a large amount of cooked spinich, and today my stools looked almost black/green.Now im very scared not knowing what is going on.Could the spinich be whats making my stool so dark?I didnt see any blood today.I have no pain what so ever. The stool is neither hard nor diaharrea like. What do you think?I would just like to go to the Dr. prepared.
PLEASE SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY!

Yes, whatever you eat can change the appearance of your stools. For example, eating a lot of fatty foods will make it darker. The iron in spinach will do the same. So will internal bleeding, though I am guessing this is not the case with you.
Blood in stools should always be checked out. Though fresh (red)blood may just be an indication of piles.

Having been in this very situation I feel I can give a suggestion as to what MAY be the cause. I was diagnosed with an anal fissure, basically a small tear in the lining of the anus/colon. While this condition is benign and should heal on its' own with proper diet containing plenty of fibre and yes, exercise. Keep in mind that this could also be a symptom of something more serious in the colon. Your doctor may indicate a colonoscopy or a sygmoidoscopy to determine exactly what's going on. Good Luck.

Yes, spinach is high in iron and that will cause your stool to turn a blackish/green color. If you take iron pills.....your stool is always a blackish/green color.
The blood in your stool......do you have hemorrhoids? That could cause the blood. You may have hemorrhoids up inside your rectum and they might be bleeding. If your stool was firm....meaning you might have been a little constipated....you could have put some stress on your hemorrhoids and caused them to bleed a little.
If it was a lot of blood......then you should be worried. You could have a lower GI bleed. I'm talking a LOT of blood.....not just a streak. A lower GI bleed is caused when diverticula in your intestine breaks open for whatever reason and starts bleeding. If that ever happens........yes, you need to see a doctor immediately. Most of the time you would need a colonoscopy to see what's going on down there.
It wouldn't hurt to go to the doctor......if you have the insurance and the time......go for it. I figure it's just hemorrhoids, but it wouldn't hurt to get checked out.

Yes different foods can make your stools different colours, for example if you eat spinach stool may be a greeny black.
However you were smart to make a doc's appointment with the blood in your stool. It may be nothing , but then again it may be something. Always wise to check before panicking.
I've noticed when I eat tomatoes, oranges etc my stool is a different colour as well and it just may be individual body functions.
Good luck.

Definately the spinach caused your stool to be black coz spinach has iron and it gives your stool a blackish colour and I know it coz i have experienced it.I have lack of haemoglobin so I have to take iron tablets so once when we made eggplants,my stool was alsoblackish in colour. It could not be the spinach causing you bleeding coz I've never heard of such cases. It could maybe be the beginning of piles but as it was not paining I don't think so that is it and as I'm not a doctor, you can't trust 100% on my answer.(sorry for the big answer)

Blood in the stool can be bright red, maroon in color, black and tarry, or occult (not visible to the naked eye). Causes of blood in stool range from harmless, annoying conditions of the gastrointestinal tract such as hemorrhoids to serious conditions such as cancer. Blood in the stool should be evaluated by a health care professional. Spinach and collards cause dark stools and often dark stools are caused by blood that has been digested.

It is so worth it to get checked out but try not to stress over it, your most likely fine. If you strained too hard to pass your bowel movement that can cause a little blood and yes foods containing iron can cause stool to look dark. It would also help to know your age. doctors are now recommending getting checked even in your 30's. So get checked and you will have piece of mind. best of luck..

yup it's the spinach, I've also had the streak thing as long as it's red and not black youre ok. If they do a colon oscopy you have to drink this stuff to clean you out and then use a supository and an enema real fun stuff, so they can get a good clean look at your colon to make sure you don't have anything going on in there like polops or hemaroids and stuff. Good luck.
