My male kitten, named "Hunter" is no Hunter at all. He will actually take a dead mouse from his sister and try to pass it off as his own kill. Last night after terrorizing the household, and climbing on dressers, shelves, etc, I turned on the light and he was on the rug in a "predator's posture", with his "kill" - a 4 inch plastic lizard.

"God made the cat in order that humankind might have the pleasure of caressing the tiger." -- Ferdand Mery

The "domestic" cat isn't that far removed from his jungle cousin (some scientists say that the household cat really doesn't even meet the criteria for domesticated) so the hunting instinct is very strong in them. Your cat Hunter is just doing what comes natural to him -- though his selection of prey is slightly off.

There is a great book called "The Cats of Thistle Hill" that talks about a collection of barn cats and household cats. One of the marmalade tabbies in this story would go on long excursions to "hunt" sticks. He would then bring his "prey" to the back porch for all to admire. It wasn't uncommon for there to be upwards of 20 sticks on the porch by the end of the day.

I use to live on one of the islands in Puget Sound; while there I watched a 12-pound grey tabby (that belonged to the neighbors), stalk and try to chase one of the local deer. He crept to within 15 yards of the deer under cover of dune grass, he then charged out. The deer startled at first, but then turned to face him. When he was within five feet of this deer he stopped and flopped down on his side -- acting as if the entire exercise was a game!

What Hunter is doing is fine -- and falls under the "cute and silly" listing. I'd even encourage him to keep doing this. It sounds like he gets pleasure from this. -- Andy

Your kitten is just being silly. Kittens will play with all sorts of random objects like grocery bags(they love the crinkly noises), shoelaces, etc. My kittens are outdoor kittens and even like to play with icicles. Kittens will play with anything that moves even the slightest bit when they touch it.

Cute and silly.

At least his kill is dead. My mom and dad had a cat that would bring in live chipmunks and mice and show them off. He would also play with them until they died, then sit and cry because they would no longer play back.

He's just a kitten and he's playing.
He will more than likely "Kill" a lot of things in his lifetime...like his toys, your shoes, dust bunnies under the bed.

We have four cats...and the male plays with a pair of rolled up socks...he "Kills" those socks everyday!

Hes about as dangerous as my roommates cat Jello. Hes very good at hunting inanimate objects. When he "catches" something he has to brag about it, you can hear him calling from the other room "mrraaow, mrraaow", and we are always like, "what do you got jello?", and he brings it in and we tell him, "oooh, thats a good one, jello," and he prances all around like he caught a real animal. Cute and funny.
