I don't know about "within the next couple of years", but I believe the whole world will find itself in serious trouble one day - maybe in our lifetime. Just look around and see how things are escalating.
-Nuclear arms race. You may not think we're in one, but we are. North Korea and Iran are both fighting for their rights to enrich uranium. We're fighting against them almost to the point of taking military action to stop them.
-Russia has nukes and Russia is poor. If you think they wouldn't sell them to a smaller country for a buck, you're dead wrong. Their society is corrupt and starving. They even have some nuclear warheads unaccounted for from the cold war. Yeah, that's right, they can't find them.
-China probably has nukes, and China is a communist nation. They will likely back North Korea should we take any action.
-Japan is the only country who knows what nuclear war is like. They've decided to side with us on stopping the production of nuclear arms, with good reason.
-Isreal and Pakistan have been fighting since the dawn of man. They're war hungry, and don't think for a second they wouldn't choose a side should any fighting break out within their capabilities.
Either way this plays out, there are way too many nukes sitting around in many countries' backyards. The next world war will be a nuclear war, with deaths in the millions. WWIII will be our last war. It's downright scary to think about.
"I know not what WWIII will be fought with, but WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones."
-Albert Einstein, quoted as saying after we built the first atom bomb.

I don't know if it will happen in the next couple of years, but it is going to happen. I believe that it will have alot to do with the war on terror, Venezula, Mexico, Cuba, and Iran.
If Iran, Venezula, Cuba, and Mexico were to become an alliance, and WWIII does go down, it would be the United States' fourth war where our military would be forced to repel borders (the 1st;revolutionary war, 2nd; war of 1812, 3rd; Mexican-American war) from an invasion.
I also believe that there is a threat posed by North Korea, and China's involvement with their nuclear program.
There are alot of people, far more intelligent and paid far better than I, that deal with that stuff on a daily basis. I'm sure that there's a plan in place for any scenario.
Hope that answers your question.

The type of general, open conflict typically associated with a 'World War' is unlikely. It is very likely you may see an entire region erupt in war, such as the middle east or Africa, but it is unlikely that this would spill into other portions of the world. World War 1 in truth was not really a world war, but a european war. Not until World War 2, did you see battles happening or planned on every continent. I say planned because although fighting did not break out in South America, both the Japanese and Nazis planned attacks on the Panama canal.
The global economy makes war on that scale damaging in ways it never was before. Countries not involved in a conflict, now make themselves involved to get a fast diplomatic solution before the cost of oil, or other imports is impacted and destroys their own economy.

Iran is years faraway from being able to flow after Israel and if Iran ever did Israel is greater beneficial than able to wiping Iran off the map on that is own... united statesa. might help Israel yet i won't be able to work out it risking a worldwide conflict which might see united statesa. pitted against something of the worldwide as a manner to do this is struggling with... i think of you may see the yankee public ward off their politicians from embarking on particular defeat...and after Iraq no u . s . a . interior the worldwide has self belief in any 'info' that united statesa. might contemporary to justify an attack on Iran....no longer to point to connect them in a coalition.. with the aid of Bush united statesa. does no longer have the credibility it as quickly as had..perhaps a clean president could have the skill to opposite that...yet that is going to be a protracted technique... yet there are particularly too many variables on your senario that to predict with any actuality a WWlll might ever come approximately..

It already started. It is going to get a lot hotter, though, when the US declares war on Iran.
Expect Russia to align with Iran.
China will be smart enough to just sit back and watch. They will probably move on Formosa while the US is distracted.

at the time of war the world wars werent called world wars. ww1 used to be the Great War ,we might look back on the war on terror as ww3
Terror however is a different kind of war involving cowardly guerilla conflict instead of direct confrontation
personally I hope there will never be a world war in the traditional sense

It is a strong possibility, with our intent to attack Iran, and maybe North Korea in the future. There is no telling what Russia and China are going to do, we could be fully involved in a world war that could lead to nuclear annihilation in just a few short years. I see events leading up to it and if it isn't diffused there is a good chance it will happen.

If Iran goes nuke - it is likely that a nuclear conflagration will erupt in the Middle East at the very least.
It is arguable from a certain point of view that WWIII has already started.
