The Border Collie is by far the most intelligent dog. They are bred to actually think about what they are doing and they know exactly what their job is. I love all dogs, but, the Border Collie is by far the smartest.

I have always had a little different approach to measuring a dogs intelligence, and I have been training dogs for a little over 50 years.
In the act of teaching a dog what the correct response to any command is, it will go through a trial & error process of all the possible responses that it can think of in it's quest for the proper one. Well,,, how many possible responses can a particular dog think of???
You will find without a Shadow of a doubt that the breeds in the herding group are the most intelligent. The reason is simple, most breeds are developed to fit the requirements of a job, and herding is the act of out thinking another animal.

It really depends on what you mean by "intelligence."

Do you mean intelligent in that it will do anything to please you and listen to you at all times. Easy to train for a reward? Golden retriever would be the dog.

If you mean an intelligent dog that will think for itself and act accordingly, then it is not the Golden retriever. Shepards are great for understanding the situation and acting properly when in a situation. I have also found spitzes (bred as circus performers) to be unusually perceptive in many situations.

Other dogs just have innate characteristics that cannot be explained. Like the ability to know when to trust someone, or to pick up on personal issues like health or emotions. Not all dogs have these and they vary between breeds. When you find one of these, its special. It can be found in any breed.

the Border Collie and Australian Shepherd usually rate highest but in each test done there is usually one or two standouts of other breeds. The problem is, there are mutts that are extremely intelligent. It is not a breed issue but a dog to dog issue. You can have a litter in which one pup will stand out in the area of intelligence and the others will show no real signs that they are as smart. So in truth, there is no real breed that is more intelligent than another. It is by dog only.

This has been a back & forth position on 2 breeds; the Standard Poodle & the Border Collie. @ this time the Std Poodle is #1 in intelligence according to the AKC - 1 of the descriptions in the standard for the Poodle is they are "promptly obedient".

You can't just go by breed. I've known extremely smart dogs that were a certain breed and met not so bright dogs of the same breed. Just like people, intelligence varies.

depends on the person and the way the dog is brought up. if there's alot of interaction and mind stimulation, the dog can learn more. if the dog is left outside away from people it only knows dog. i had a border/golden x that made me feel like he knew alot more than i did. but after i rescued him when he was 2, when i wasn't at work he went and did everything with me. we talked all the time. my burnese/lab x was 2 when we rescued him, but he had been tied to a tree and beat with a stick regularly. if you try to talk to him for too long, he gets nervous and walks away. he loves to be pet and hugged, but too much attention unnerves him. my shep/lab x liked everyone to think she was stupid. but she was calculating. i have a malamute/wolf x that's highly intelligent. he studies everything. and once he knows what you expect (that can take awhile) he doesn't forget. my ridgeback/mastiff x picks up on stuff quick. he's somewhat dependable on the rights and wrongs of things. interaction is key.

I have a lab and a border collie. The lab follows every command and is extremely loyal. But that's just the "dumb lab" syndrome. Now, my border collie actually thinks about what you are saying, then does it and he watches you. The vet I work for says they have proven that the collie's are one of the smartest dogs out there. They are trained to herd a whole flock of sheep with just a few dogs. He really does surprise me sometimes.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the Jack Russell outsmarts any other breed. They are so easy to train, ... they just want to please. Not for someone who works all day though, they require lots of exercise, attention and company, they are half human! They are in tons of T.V. shows, commercials, and movies (there MUST be a reason for that!), and they are so damn cute too! Just be careful if you get one - they are SO smart, that they might just train YOU instead ! ;)
