The cats anal gland is more than likely blocked.
It's usual sort of a sour smell and you may also notice that they drag their butts on the carpet.

Take the cat to the Vet if that is the problem the Vet will express the gland.

I had a cat with this problem a few years ago, the Vet did tell me he could show me how to do it myself, but since I didn't want to put on a pair of latex gloves and put a finger in my cats rectum...I decided that if it ever happened again I'd pay the Vet to do it.
Besides just because he showed me didn't mean I was going to be able to do it right and I didn't want to hurt my cat.

Check if the same putrid smell also issues from the mouth. Sniff the rest of the body as well. If the same putrid smell is generalised, you may want to check for signs of life.

(A gentle leg-pull from a fellow cat-owner and lover. Blocked anal gland is likeliest, but check with your vet.)

Usually cats release anal glands when they poop. Some cats have a problem where they don't release them when they should, and they do at other times randomly. I would ask your vet or look it up online. It smells really bad, not like poop, but like really really stinky booty.
