If it is strep. you'll need an antibioitic. Otherwise, gargles and lozenges are fine.

If it is just a sore throat then take lozenges or gargal soluable paracetamol which will ease the discomfort. You can also get sprays which numb the back of the throat, although do not taste very nice. If you have tonsillitis then you will see pus. You will then need to go and see your GP to get some anti-biotics.
