Well, why do we talk?It's the same reason. Cats meow to communicate or to warn people or other animals to stay away. Just as we yell to tell people to stay away. Other wise cats might want to try to communicate with you. If they start scraching the door the cat wants to go out. But sometimes communication isn't that easy. If they are sitting in front of you meowing play with her/him. THat is all I can tell you.

Your cat is trying to communicate with you. If you listen carefully they make different meows and each means something different. It will take some time to figure out what each sounds means, just be patient and pay attention to what is going on when they make these certain sounds.

They are talking to you, trying to get your attention. My cat is Siamese so he talks from the moment I get home at night until I go to bed and sometimes during the night. I talk to him so he talks back. You can tell if they are just chatting or if they are in pain, the meow is different. Mine has a distinctive one around 11pm, dinner time!! You can learn to decipher them and know if they are just talking or in pain.
