The water and chilling techniques are the only ones I know but I thought I would share another tip with you.
To get the onion smell off your hands rub them on the inside of the sink.
Good luck

Forget all the soaking in water ideas. The best way is to chop them is quick as possible and get them into whatever recipe you are using them for. Why go through extra prep work before chopping when you just get the job done and it is over with. If you chop onions slowly, you are exposing yourself to the tearing factors of the onions for a longer period of time and you will end up crying while chopping (never a good thing). Just get them chopped and use them.

Well this is possible. Once you peel the onions make sure u soak them into water for 10 to 15 minutes with a pinch of salt in the water. Then you may cut the onions :)
I have also heard the chewing gum while cutting onion prevents tears. But i seriously dont buy it.
Anyways, you try the water thingy hope that helps.
Happy cooking ;)

It is best to have a candle in a safe palce and in an area close to your eye level when cutting an onion. The heat of the candle dissipates the gases given off by the onion. Try it, it really works.
I do it all of the time. It must not be a tealight candle but an average size candle will do the job. Have a great day!

You can use Vidalia Onions. They contain much less sulphur than standard yellow or white onions. Depending on how you decide to cut your onions...I cut the onions in half and then into thin strips, you can quickly cut the onions in half and soak them in cold water for 5 to 10 minutes before you slice them into smaller strips (I have to do this to onions before I can eat them raw as they upset my stomach if un-soaked). I find keeping a fan on nearby also helps. It disperses the fumes that come from the onion and make your eyes tear.

it is true that normally people suffer irritations on their eyes when they cut or chops onions. but it cleans the eyes. so it is better if you cut the onions yourself or else get yourself a salad shooter.

Can put in fridge for about half an hr first will help OR cut under running water will help too. I found out that peole that wear contacts , the onions do not bother their eyes at all. Dunno why. I am not one of the lucky ones to wear them tho. Also, hold your breath while cutting. It is the gas escaping from the onion that burns the eyes and if you do not breath it it won't burn. ???My mom told me this, nad it does work. Hope you aren't cutting too many tho. LOL

In addition to chilling them before hand try not cutting into the root end of the onion. This seems to be very effective for me.
