Salam,

I'm teaching myself Arabic and at the moment I'm learning how to write. I would like to know why when you write such words as "choukran" in Arabic script, there seems to be no letter to signify the N at the end of the word. It seems to me, when I read "شكرا", that I would say it as "choukra"... Can anyone please tell me why?

Many thanks.

there is no letter to signify the N because the N sound is taken for granted. the grammatical term is tanween, translated the addition of the N sound. in arabic mostly every noun would get a tanween, i.e, shukrAN, shukrIN, and shukrUN. the only exceptions wud be when possesion is shown or the noun has an alif laam in front of it, so in that case it would be ash shukrU, as opposed to ash shukrUN.

if u r asking on how to type it, u press shift and ص on ur arabic keyboard and u get ً which is the sound u r looking for
if u r asking when to use it, it has many conditions in arabic grammar, one of them is that when u have an "alef" أ at the end of a word and it should be mansoubeh as it takes a fatha (for instance when the word is indirect object of the verb...) u can not pronounce the fatha which is an "a" sound just like the alef at the end , so we put tanwin which is the "an" sound
there are many rules for tanwin and many exceptions

Actually there is, but its not written in the simplified script people use these days.

Its called Tanveen.

Its like two fathas on top of the last alif.

شُكراً

The word you have spelled out is indeed "shoukra" -- "choukra would be the French transliteration. I can't determine why the nun is not pronounced nor written in expressions like 'alf shoukr, but it isn't.
