When India gained her independance from the UK.The indian govt.decreed that hindi and english would be the national languages. This was to simplify the education system. They're are hundreds of dialects and tongues in India
Obviously local schools teach the native language and hindi/english
Schools of higher learning only teach these two languages. So hindi is propering quite nicely

"Hindi is the sencond Most spoken language of the World", aur aapko lagta hai ke western languages Hindi ko khatam kar dengi? Hindi is not only a language but a culture, and it is evolved from the world's oldest language. Hindi is ever-lasting. Long-live Hindi, Long-live Hindustan.

Why only Hindi? All Indian languages have been "infested" with the English language. There are very few Indians left who can speak a full sentence in their mother tongue without using a word or two of the English language. We have even stopped calling our parents Babuji/Maaji (or the respective vernacular equivalent) and choose to address them as Daddy (Papa) /Mummy (Mom) or some strange equivalent!!

It's neigther finished or gaining. You see that most of the people in IT companies (including MNCs) speak Hindi in general. It's just being complimented by English.
