docs, did you go to med school because you like science (like human anatomy and such) or because you like helping people and being with them?
the same question for vets, did you study veterinary medicine because you like science or because you like helping animals and being with them?

one last question for both, could you give a percentage, like for example( I inetered med school because I like sciense 30% and because I like helping others 40%).

thanks in advance!!!

I'm in medical school right now. I would say that I went into medicine because I like science 100% and I like helping people 100%. I wouldn't say that they're in conflict with one another. I worked as a chemist for a couple years before medical school and although it was fun to work with science and be in a scientific field, there was very little human contact and I didn't feel like I was really helping anyone. In medicine, I can use the tools that I learn through science AND help people, which is a tremendous bonus!

You'll take: Biology Chemistry Organic and Inorganic Physics Calculus ...as prerequisites for med school admissions in college so taking those in high school will give you a decent background to start off. for other random stuff for vet and doctor take: Earth Science Sociology Human Behavior Animal science Environmental Science basically anything that has to do with science of some sort b/c to be a doctor or vet, you'll need every science you can think of

Well, it's a bit of both for sure. you have to like science and you have to like continually learning, but you need to improve your math skills.. 30% and 40% only add up to 70%. Where is the other 30% :)

It's all about helping people in the end. Thats what you do as a doctor. But you have to be book smart and street smart to succeed as a physician.

well, i think you can help people in many ways ,even if you are not directly in contact with them -for example if you work in laboratory as a scientist...
medicine is very wide area and you can always find something that you are interested in. personally, i study medicine because i'm intrested in science, and i belive that every scientific project will sooner or later result in helping someone in some way. at least a little bit. if you choose medicine for any reason (even for money) you will help people....good luck!

Oh... i forgot the precentages....science 70%, other 40%

i am in vet school because i love biology. A big plus about vet school is the comparative aspect. Overall all animals are pretty much the same, but I do like learning about the variations. (science 75%, helping-25%). In vet med you help animals, but you are still helping people as well.

Hi
I'm in fist year of medical studies in France.
Most of people go there because they like science, unfortunatelly, some because of the prestige of being a dctor, money you earn or parents wish.
Seems that in the beginig, everyone wants to help people, but that during the years, it changes....
As far as I'm concerned, it's 4 help people... in an NGO in Africa... But I must admit that I find human body (science) very intresting...

Initially it was about an even mix. Since, I'd say it's largely the profession and service to society (in contrast to individuals) mostly, intellectual stimulation second, and help for individuals third. I'd like for it to be different, but (1) I've learned the limitations of medicine in general and myself in particular and (2) I've learned a lot more about people, who often use medicine to get them patched up enough to allow them to do even more stupid and destructive things along the lines of those that brought them to me in the first place.
