Heh- that IS a good question.
Most fruit and vegetables carry their good stuff close to the skin so it is generally accepted that eating fruit and veg WITH the skins on and preferably raw is best.
BUT. In this day and age we rely on pesticides and other chemicals to make our fruit and veg appealing enough to want to buy and eat. This ranges from the pesticide used to dust the apple trees with to protect against attack from insects etc to the wax used to make them look appealing and shiny and yummy.
What do you do? You are darned if you do and darned if you do not!
LOL!
My advice? Wash the apple very carefully (I even use a tiny drop of washing up liquid to loosen the wax) and rub it (polish) dry with a tea-towel to get off as much of the wax as possible and then enjoy.
Afterall- the good in the apple outweighs the bad. And particularly if you can buy organic!

There are lots of vitamins in the skin so eating it is good - but make sure you wash it first to remove any harmful bacteria etc.

I was always told that there are lots of vitamins in the skin. The skin is harder to digest, this is why we do not feed it to babies, but it is very healthy.
