I could start with a few well worn cliche's such as:
1.) Guns don't kill people...PEOPLE kill People!
2.) A bullet isn't always the answer, but it is always an option
3.) A gun is the great equalizer

Think about it...Weather kills people. Are you afraid of weather to the point where you won't go outside?

Automobile accidents kill people. Are you so averse to autos that you will not venture out on the road?

Medicines kill people? When you are prescribed a medicine by your doctor are you afraid to take it?

If the answers to the above questions are NO, then your fear of weapons is unjustified, and points to a simple lack of knowledge and understanding about them.

As part of training in the U.S. Marine corps, men are occasionally required to SLEEP with their weapons in a nice warm bunk bed! The idea is that the person aquires a FAMILIARITY with the weapon, so that it becomes a PART of them, like a ring you wear daily, or a watch. You feel naked without it.

If one is properly educated, trained and learns INTIMATELY the properties of their chosen weapon, the fear changes into a healthy RESPECT for the weapon.

May I suggest starting by reading some things written by expert gun advocates. I suggest http://www.john-ross.net. John Ross is an expert marksman, Legislator, author and teaches courses for handgun ' Carry Permits' in Missouri. His webpage is informative and fun to read. Please ENJOY his section called ' Ross In Range' which covers MANY delightful topics in addition to gun ownership.

Then...WITH YOUR HUBBY, sign up at a firing range near you, and pop off several hundred rounds with your mate. Most of the larger ranges have firearms for use on the range, allowing you to try several calibres and sizes to find one that is comfortable for you. I think you will find the excitement and adrenaline rush VERY enjoyable, and with proper supervision you can easily become a RESPONSIBLE gun owner!!

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!!

There are many websites that discuss firearm use and misuse. But that is all dry facts. Your concerns won't be allayed by reading facts. You will have fewer fears after you have a better understanding of what firearms are and how they work.

If you want to become more comfortable with guns, the best way would be to take a firearm safety course. I would recommend a female instructor for you, as you will be better able to identify with them than with a male instructor.

"I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand." - Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906), speech in San Franscisco, July 1871

"The available information does not indicate that gun control will reduce violent crime against women. Much of the information actually points in the opposite direction ... gun control measures ... actually hurt women by restricting or removing the most effective method of self-defense available ...." - Larish, Inge Anna, "Why Annie Can't Get Her Gun: A Feminist Perspective on the Second Amendment," Univ. of Illinois Law Review, 1996, Issue 2 http://www.saf.org/LawReviews/Larish1.html

Rule of life number 50: Dogs are inherently more dangerous than firearms. Because dogs have a mind of their own and can revert to their nature. A firearm is restrained by the rules of physics. They cannot fire by themselves, they can't reload themselves.

Maybe what you should do is go down to the gun shop handle some firearms just so you can face your fear and get accustom to being around them

Then you should take a NRA training course

I now a man who when he was a child, shot his twin and killed him. His parents couldn't cope with the grief and he was sent away until he was an adult.
Guns can be found by thieves and used against you, before you can use them yourself.
I was brought up with guns - my father was a hunter and yes, guns did on one occasion save my brother's life - my mother shot the poisonous snake that was about to strike him. But other than that, there never was the necessity to use one.
I don't know where you live. Most robbers would come with a gun anyway.
If you don't want it around you, stand your ground.

I'm with you Angel,
Often guns attract guns

You are often better off with a baseball bat or even mace spray. and if they are available to you a Taser. The latter fires hooks and delivers a paralysing electric shock. Does not kill but stops anyone in their tracks. You can also keep shocking them if they dare to move while you call the police. They are cheaper than guns but very effective in providing protection.

i think having a weapon asks for problem that arise to totally blow up more often then not. if someone is gonna rob you is pulling out your own gun to save some money and hassle really worth getting shot and possibly killed over? and kids+guns is asking for trouble.

You gotta get over it. Maybe go to the gun range and get used to shooting and holding it.
