Change his dollars to Euros before leaving home. Tip: tell him to get some change before leaving the airport as Buses give no change. You did not mention his mode of travel. If he is hiring a car he will have no problem. Buses and Trains (Dart) around Dublin are excellent but out in the countryside they are few and far between. Tell him to keep his property in sight at all times as it is likely to disappear if he doesn't.

Change the money to Euros as many of the countries in Europe use this currency, including Ireland. Change your money before leaving - the exchange rate for you isn't great for you at the moment by the way.
Don't bother changing any money to GB pounds unless you are going to the UK or Northern Ireland (they accept Euros in many parts of the North also). Terry W - Bringing GB pounds is not a reliable form of currency as they don't accept it everywhere. It is also uneconomical as you will lose a lot of money doing that, especially when Euros are used in so many more countries (if he is travelling around Europe).
Money is as easily changed here, as it is in any other country, it won't be a problem... you probably should focus on where he wants to see and how to get there instead. There is plenty to see, and I would advise not spending too much time in Dublin - not that there is anything too wrong with it - but there is just so much more to the country. Do some research - buy a travel book.

Firstly dont listen to that piece of crap terry w.
You can change money at any bank, there will also be places to change money at the airport, and also most hotels can also change money over for you.
hope your son enjoys his trip, Bunratty Castle is great and the banquet is worth a visit, the Burren, Cliffs of Moher, The Limerick and Shannon area are great loads to see and do. Kerry is also great, Killarney is a must for any visitor.

best to change money in bank before he leaves USA. It's the same as anywhere just needs to be careful: don't walk anywhere alone at night. put money away safely. seperate money into different pockets and wallets. be careful with mobile phone so as not to be stolen.
