There is a problem with the main chip on this TV so it will only accept analogue/RGB signal. As soon as you plug anything into the SCART socket then the TV switches itself off!
Is this fixable?

If you have recognised a fault with the "main chip" which I presume you mean to be the large microprocessor on the board then it is quite possible that a short is occurring inside the micro when you connect the scart lead causing an incorrect set off command. Its not unusual to have more than one fault on a microprocessor. Its probably fixable but it might be expensive.

This sounds like a problem with the SCART socket itself. It is repairable and would not cost much.

If the set is actually switching off or into stand by then the power supply protection circuit is coming into play.

This could be for a variety of reasons e.g. Dry solder joints, cracked circuit board etc.

Any competent engineer could probably repair this on site though there may be a call out charge. It's usually cheaper to take it in.

check menus on tv relating to scart connection.
faulty equipment connected to scart could make it switch off

Are you sure it's switching off and not just automatically going to an AV channel?
