If it's untaxed it shouldn't be on the road. However as there are 1.4 million untaxed vehicles in the UK it seems that lots of other people are getting away with it!

They say five working days to cover themselves, it should arrive quicker than that. Once you have the insurance certficate or a cover note take it and your half of the V5 (log book) to an issueing post office, fill out another form, think its a V10 pay your money and they give you a tax disc. All forms are downloadable from the DVLA website

It is not worth the risk and hassle of getting caught untaxed. If you can live without it for a few days while the policy comes through do so, if not try being nice to your insurer they may be able to fax or email you through a covering letter to comfirm you are insured which you could then use to purchase your road tax.
Happy motoring!

It has to be taxed even if it's parked on the road.

Why is it taking 5 days to send a letter ? In my experience I have always had my policies the next day.

You can drive the car as you should be insured - ring the company to check the date it starts from.

As for car tax - if you want to drive the car then you'll be taking a chance!

Your insurance company couldn't email or fax you temporary proof of insurance the same day?

Any fly-by-night insurance company should have been able to do that. I suggest you drop these assholes ASAP. At some level, whatever company you're dealing with is incompetent. (If you're in the US)

You can physically drive the car, but if you have expired tags/no tags, don't be surprised if you get pulled over and ticketed.

any insuranse agent will give you a cover note when you take out ins with them you get it straight away the certificate follows a few days later the cover note is all you need to prove insurance
As for the dvla it would be a time for them to reply as they have to issue a new log book if you could get to swansea dvla they would sort it out there

It shouldn't be on the road before the tax is paid - you could recieve a big fine - (Ithink £1000). but if you call the insurance company they should be either able to fax or e-mail you your certificate, which will be enough for you to get taxed.

Ask your insurance company of they can fax a copy of your Motor Insurance Cerificate I am sure they will do this. You can then tax the car

Do NOT drive it, it's untaxed. Everyone always says "it's in the post" even though in your case it's true. If parked on public road, get it off just in case you are caught.
