Area 51 is part of the Nevada Test and Training Range located north of Las Vegas, Nevada. It's official name is the Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3, and run out of Edwards Air Force Base in California.

It has been used for developing and testing various Black Ops technology, such as the (formerly) top secret aircraft F117 Fighter and the B2 Stealth Bomber. The most recent rumoured aircraft that is being tested there is the "Aurora". Nobody unauthorised is allowed onto the range, nor can they fly over it (even military - fighter pilots call it "the container" since they are not allowed to say the word "box").

Most workers employed at Area 51 commute from Las Vegas daily on special flights called "Janet" flights that leave from McCarran Airport in Las Vegas.

If you want to drive to Area 51 from Las Vegas it will take you about 2-2.5 hours. The closest town is Rachel which is located on the "Extraterrestrial Highway". From the ET highway you take Groom Lake Road until the signs prevent you from going any further.

There is an excellent website called Dreamland Resort which gives pretty much all info available on the subject. Link below.
