We (Western U.S.) use a lot of natural gas, which comes out of wells just as oil does. It is piped to storage areas and then distributed to cities. In rural areas where the cost of distribution would be too high, LPG is used. Individual houses on farms have tanks that are periodically refilled by trucks.

In the U.S., gas for cooking is usually butane, propane, or methane. It depends on the area of the country and the type of area (city versus rural) as to which one you're likely to find typically in use.
