I need all the capitals to be lowercase? is there an easy way?

Select the words/letters you want to change and click Shift+F3. This toggles between upper/title/lower case.

Note: This may not work if the character formatting is set to "All Caps". You can check this by choosing Format -> Character

I thought you could highlight any piece of text, then press Control + A to highlight it all. Then change the case (but I can't remember how to do that bit - maybe in Format - Character?)

first of all select the text then go to format menu and choose change case option then a box appear select lower case from this box and click ok. You text convert in lower case.

I suggest that you "mark All" and then go to Format and try something there, like Styles and Formatting or Paragraph.
