It's different in every state. But assault is not that serious usually it's reported right away in the heat of the moment. So if your waiting what were you waiting for? maybe just forget it and go on with life.

after the fact-it sounds like revenge. if it were a crime when it happened-you would have already reported it.

It's best to report it as soon as possible so they can take pictures and all that crap as evidence.
