I efiled my taxes yesterday and some of the companies said income below a certain figure AND age below say 50 to qualify for efile??Why does the government allow age discrimination in this??What is going on here? I think it is because they think younger people will pay for the efile state tax return added on and older people will not.

yes, but it is advertisement, and the government allows them to post there...should not be discrimination...nothing is free...what they make money on is if someone does state efile there to save time.

that's a good question and i have noticed that, but i'm not really sure it's discrimination. i definitely see where you're coming from and i'm inclined to agree with you, but like the first person said, these are private companies offering services. they're helping you file taxes for free when they didn't really have to. in that respect it's like they're saying they specialize in those certain types of returns..(a nice way to say discrimination perhaps?) but some are strictly set up to help elderly and low income etc.

Send me the names of the "free" companies. I am low income AND old!....

The act of efiling is free to all through the IRS...your question is kinda hazy.

Personally, it's the only way to file in my opinion, free or not.

There are some assistance services with reduced or no fees that are available only to older or lower income taxpayers . If that's what you're talking about that is quite legal.

Because these are private companies that are offering a service.

So I had so much trouble realized it was my age. Now you can do it yourself and wait months for your return.
So the government does have to pay so soon. BS
