Why is the wheelhouse on a Mississippi riverboat so called?

You steer a ship with a wheel. I don't think that is a term only used regarding a riverboat. Though, pilothouse or "the bridge" may be the more common term today regarding a modern ship.

I would guess that its because thats where the steering wheel is !
