Girls have to grow long hair-it's for beauty;and boys cut their hair-it is for decency.
Boys too have the same amount of hair growing but they take regular hair-cut don't they?
in Indian History and Chinese History it is said that men too grew hair.
Chinese did it because they thought if they cut their hair, their health would decrease.
In India, especially in South India, the parents made their sons to grow long hair and tonsure them periodically. It was their belief that once they tonsure the hair periodically, the dirtiness and some evils are removed from their boys and they will be good.
if u r a boy and if u want to have a long hair, just don't take hair cut!
but remember that if u've long hair u've got to maintain it or else u will have the problem of head-louse!!

religious stereotyping(" a man should be clean shaven". i'm sorry but being clean shaven has nothing to do with the length of hair, its just been inturpetted/twisted to fit a group/groups of religious leaders criteria for their flock and picked up by the world). every one should be able to appear the way they want without worrying if they will be ridiculed for the length of thier hair. i could probably retire if i had $100.00 for every time i've heard "are you a girl", "i'm sorry i thought you were a girl", some one comes up behind me"excuse me miss" then i turn around(the emabarassment on thier faces is priceless).
i personally would like to see everyones hair(male & female) as long as they are comfortable growing it.
in many cultures through out time(biblical, native american indian, some hispanic regions, etc.) long hair on a male is/was a rite of passage, also a macho type thing involved (if your big and bad enough to cut my hair bring it but ya better kill me), and not neccessarilly gay as depicted in a couple of these other answers
in todays world, here in america a guy with long hair is almost automaticly presumed to be a drug addict, more stereotyping

Hair length started to be set to the current social norms in greek society. It had a strong base in sexuality. The one with the longer hair was the one that would be bent over so as the other would have something to hold on to during backwards penetration. That also made it easier for homosexuals to identify each other. Later as homosexuality became taboo, the homosexual male, and female, would over compensate in an effort to disguise themselves by having extremely short if not bald haircuts.
